Niger is positioning itself as a rising oil and gas frontier in the Sahel, as Algeria's state-owned energy giant Sonatrach prepares to launch well-drilling operations at the Kafra field in early April.
The move signals renewed momentum in Niger's hydrocarbons sector and highlights growing investor confidence in the AES bloc member's energy potential.
The development was confirmed by Hakim Zebiri, Director of International Cooperation at Niger's Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines, who said preparations are complete and drilling will commence once key equipment arrives, according to Radio Algerie.
"The actual launch of the drilling operations will begin in the coming days," Zebiri noted, adding that the project marks "a significant concrete step towards the development of energy resources in Niger."
The announcement came on the sidelines of the Algerian-Nigerien High Joint Commission for Cooperation held in Niamey, where officials from both countries reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral energy ties.
Beyond the Kafra project, Niger is actively expanding its oil and gas ambitions by opening up new exploration opportunities and strengthening technical capacity. Officials revealed plans to grant additional exploration blocks, a move aimed at attracting more foreign investors and accelerating upstream activity.
Zebiri emphasized that the initiative reflects "the great trust placed in Algerian expertise," while also pointing to a broader strategy of leveraging partnerships to unlock underexplored reserves.
The government is also prioritizing capacity building, including training programs for Nigerien professionals and plans to establish a specialized laboratory for oil analysis.
These efforts come as Niger seeks to diversify its oil base beyond existing production zones and maximize revenues from the sector. With improved technical capabilities, stronger partnerships, and fresh investment inflows, the country is working to build a more resilient and competitive hydrocarbons industry.
As regional dynamics shift, Niger's push to scale up exploration and production underscores its ambition to emerge as a key energy player in West Africa.
